OZARKWILDS BEAGLESBefore the Missouri Conservation Department gained control the valley of Ozark Wilds was heavily populated with rabbits, quail and other small game. Those living here depended upon it for their meat supply. They did not have refrigeration and the large livestock they raised was their cash crop; not eaten by them.
Since, buying the land in September of 1983 I have worked and invested in improving the habitat. It has become a battle. In the past I have lost at even having asparagus for myself. Thousands of pine, fruit trees and other trees I planted have been killed off by the over population of deer. They leave little for rabbits by winter’s end and one winter most of the wild turkey starved. I have been a conservationist all my life and long ago I realized that the first word in conservation is con. I often refer to the Mo Con Department or Department of Mo Con.
Their coyotes have killed my young beagles and it is gut wrenching to hear, because they actually scream. I enjoy all wildlife, but they have made a religion of game management causing it to become an oxymoron, unless over populations of predators is considered game management.
I have lost count of all the predator proof rabbit shelters I have built and I finally have rabbits within 300 yards of the house. Summer finds the rabbits colonizing shelters farther out, but the fall raptor migration along with local winter predation leaves me hoping a breeding population will remain. Black snakes take a heavy toll during summer and are probably one reason there are no longer quail. When they come across a nest (rabbit or quail) they eliminate the total reproduction. Unfortunately, the black snakes leave huge populations of voles, moles and other such vermin. Apparently, they are smarter than the government biologists and game managers (an oxymoron). This seems to hold true for most predators and those who used to live here would not believe what con has accomplished at great expense.
I tell you this, because I too believed their religion and for years there were only a few rabbits near the house and buildings. Too few to provide the beagles and myself much enjoyment.
I learned long ago, with my first hunting dog, that one should buy a dog with a proven pedigree. Shillelagh was an outstanding Lab and we enjoyed years of good hunting and companionship that went way beyond hunting. Her pedigree meant that she could be bred to Martin’s Mr. Nifty, the top retriever in the world, for a pup.
Investing in a dog is not like buying a car. Due to breeding they enjoy the hunt with far greater joy and excitement than we humans are capable of experiencing, but vicariously we can share a bit of their overflow. My beagles have and do make my life more than it could otherwise be.
While I still have Bugle Boy an outstanding AKC/UKC beagle. The rest of my beagles are from the Impressive line put together by Phil Gardner. He bought the top beagles he could find and negotiate purchasing. Right now I have a litter of three from Impressive Rabbit Craze and a litter of six from Impressive Rabbit Spooker. These pups are nearing six months and have had all their shots. They are able to feed at will and have been wormed on schedule, so they are at their optimum. They ran their first rabbit at three months in a pen and training has begun. However, now is the time for them to join their permanent master and learn their master's ways.
Hopefully they will all have masters who can appreciate the joy and excitement they feel and convey.
I do not campaign (promote by field trialing), so I do not have those costs in time and money. I like bargains and have enjoyed many during my life, so I can share in bargains by pricing the female pups at $300 each and the males at $1000. This will hold until they are six months and then begin upwards as performance justifies. I have not done the math , but if I sold them all today and did not charge anything for my time I doubt I would break even. That is why I will sell the mothers or possibly Bugle Boy at $500 each. At 74 I can see myself having a beagle or beagles, but not raising beagles. email: firstname.lastname@example.org phone: 573-378-6430 four miles south of Versailles, MO on Hwy 5
